I was living in Vermont at the time in Stowe. I'd gone to see this band called Viperhouse in Montpelier. They were great. And there was this woman who played violin with them. And the way she played - just cascades of golden melodies - over this wondrous cacophany of sound - and the way she stood there swaying with it... I drew this and it just stuck in my head - the entire moment was so beautiful.

What feels like a few lifetimes ago, I was hitchhiking in Vermont. I used to hitchhike a lot and I also used to live in VT. Anyways, this older woman picked me up - she was maybe in her 70s I don't know - I'm a bad judge of age - and, after finding out I was an artist and seeing my (at the time) rather meager portfolio, she invited me to her home. I wasn't sure where I was spending the night and she offered me her guest room. Anyhow, after looking at my art, she said 'The human mind comprehends to 5 iterations (and she held up her hand) but you paint to 7 or more. You don't need to do that.' ⁠

'Ha.' I thought to myself. 'Yeah. ok. Challenge accepted. 9 it is!'⁠

She also showed me a grainy vhs video of an ayahuascero in Peru who was supposedly performing eye surgery on people without any anesthesia or anything (he later was exposed as a fraud) and some epoxy hockey pucks with crumbs of crystals or rocks in them that were supposedly alien technology that would heal you. So there's that. Definitely not my cult. ⁠

Anyhow, I get that excess, in many areas of life, can be, well, excessive. But when it comes to the creative expression - just follow it as far and wide as it will take you and as you can take it. Follow each thread to the nth degree. Follow it til it hurts. Follow it til it bursts wide open and you know each delicate nuance. And don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
