MASS PRINTING HAS BEGUN!

We are overjoyed to report that all of the reformatting, new proof approvals, and seemingly endless meetings and back-and-forths are done and mass production of the text has begun!

On the plus side of all this additional work and waiting is that we had to add a few more pages, and thus more images, to make everything work for the different templates the Korean plant uses for fold-out pages. The paper is more impressive too. The book has grown to 226 pages on 180 gsm art paper! It’s costing us a bit more, but the improvements are worth it to bring you a spectacular book.

We expect to have our pre-advanced copy from the plant to approve by the first week of June. From there, the plant will begin the mass binding of the whole print run and the mass printing of the dust jackets. The estimate for shipping out of the South Korean port is the last week of June. Once the shipment leaves the port, it should be 5-6 weeks across the ocean. We will be signing and numbering, packaging and shipping from San Francisco as soon as it arrives.

When I look at Thangka paintings, I think about the initial spontaneous experiences that, over time, turned into codified diagrams. The shell goes here, the lotus flower there, and so on. But does it convey the sensation? What story are we left with that isn't just that - a story? There's this phenomenon of the human experience - this sense of a dissolution of self. We can get there through multiple avenues but the sensation - the experience - is, more or less, similar: a dissolving of identity and ego where there is a sense of 'one with everything' and, yet, more than that. Beyond that. And beyond beyond that.

Sitting With It
A very tiny drawing

I love pen and ink. That is - a calligraphy pen and a bottle of ink. Although, to be fair, I think 'calligraphy pen' sort of pigeon holes it since I am often just using thin drawing nibs. There's a delicate painterliness to them - to the dipping the pen in the ink as if it is brush getting another daub of paint and the way that it flows out of the pen and onto the paper leaving this somewhat upraised line that lays atop the surface. But it's also rather unforgiving. Get caught in too thick a drop of ink and the whole pen relieves itself onto the paper. Move too quickly or too slowly and a drop appears - splat - out of nowhere. In this day of quick edits and soundtracked tik-toks - gotta get those reels posted to get the dopamine feels - I find the presence of mind that such little endeavors take to be all the more nourishing.

What I'm saying is - take time to smell the proverbial roses. Life is fleeting.

Spring... it's just peals of wisteria dripping from my porch and orange poppies bursting forth. Irises holding all the world in purple tissue thin petals unfolding holding and fresh leaves on the oak trees uncurling and dusting everything with pollen. Everything says HURRAH I'm STILL HERE! The crisp morning air brings warmth and we slowly unfold and relax into springtime, perhaps my favorite part of this seasonal dance.

I know I’ve spoken against AI art and that I’ve said that it doesn’t have any place in my own process but the truth is, I’ve actually been using it for a while. Everything I’ve made over the past few years has been generated by an AI trained on my work, process, etc.

Early in the lockdown during the pandemic I was approached by a pretty cutting edge group of people who felt that my work was a perfect starting point for training their art-generating AI because my art is so varied in it’s moods and feelings, and, really, the sheer volume of paitnings that I’ve made.

So we started by training it from early work, sketchbooks, and so on and kept feeding it chronologically, weighing the importance of some works over others and keeping in mind size and importance of the paintings.

We even put in every sketchbook and drawing I've made. It was really a cool process, like training another me to spit out art.

We went through some trial and error. It would come up with an idea and then I would paint it and we’d put that back in and be like ‘more like this’ and then, eventually, I could just be like ‘hey there’s this idea I had about the moon’ and so on.

It’s really amazing.

We call it pAIntr™ and it’ll be released soon as a subscription service and a phone app so that you can generate whatever Michael Divine painting you want for your own wall! Each image generates its own NFT as a unique identifier so you can be sure of the legitimacy and provenance of your image - that it’s a true Michael Divine pAIntr™ Work of Art.
